South side yard, before and after

The yard cleanup crew has moved beyond the back yard between the buildings, and is now encroaching on the main house. I don't have a really good before picture, but my picture of the south side from May shows a little of the now-absent disorder.

The lumber is from the remains of a dog fence that I took out yesterday. I started unscrewing the 2x4 cross-pieces, and the whole neighborhood ended up helping rip out the 4x4 posts. They were all pretty excited yesterday; the alligator that lives across the street had escaped and everybody got on the news.

  2. Oh, sure. Jimbo caught it (the same guy that helped me pull out the fenceposts). He says people are calling him "Gator" now.

  3. Animal Control was here today to make sure the gator doesn't get out - it was sunning itself on the roof, got too hot, and fell off the roof. It's fine now, but I guess it doesn't get the run of the roof any more. The state is supposed to be coming to issue a permit; apparently you can keep an alligator less than five feet in length with no permit, but above five feet, the state has to decide whether you're competent to do so, and they also notify everyone within 1000 feet of your house and they can veto it. I've got no problem with the alligator, but perhaps some of the neighbors do. We'll find out.

  4. I've heard of sex offender registries, but alligator registries? In Indiana?

  5. I'm wondering how they figure out whether you're competent to keep an alligator. Does it work like, "if you want to keep an alligator, then you obviously aren't competent"?

I'm also wondering if I get an alligator, will it keep the deer out of my yard.

  6. BTW, was that black rectangle supposed to be a door?

  7. It's a window, covered up with (black) insulation. I'll eventually uncover it.

The alligator's owner is pretty sure that the permit system is just there to make sure they know where they are when they come to take away your alligator. We'll see how it all plays out.
